Current president shall be allowed to run for one more 6-year term ending 2030: Parliament

Egypt’s Parliament concluded on Tuesday its discussions over the amendment of the constitutional article 140 regarding presidential terms, announcing that the current president shall be allowed to run for one more term which will end in 2030.

This scenario was one of several that were debated along this week. The final report of the proposal to amend the Constitution will be decided on through voting in a Tuesday session, Egypt’s Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel Aal said on Sunday.

Final voting will be casted by names of members and if approved will be sent to the president and National Electoral Commission for setting the date of referendum.

Abdel Aal said during a plenary session on Sunday that the Parliament will hold three meetings on Tuesday to conclude all discussion before taking a vote on the final report.

The meeting were attended by a seven-member sub-committee led by Abdel Aal of those entrusted with putting the final draft of the amendments.

The amendments submitted by parliamentary majority Egypt’s Support Coalition on 11 February involved changes to 11 articles; no. 102, 140, 160, 189, 190, 193, 200, 204, 234, 243, and 244.
