The government owes about EGP 1.3bn in arrears to the Alexandria Electricity Distribution Company until February.
The company’s Chairperson Medhat Fouda said the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) has entered into a number of agreements and protocols with government agencies to pay arrears owed to electricity distribution companies, including the Alexandria Company, and it was agreed that these agencies would pay their monthly consumption bill regularly.
He pointed out that the company has collected EGP 50m in fines on electricity theft cases, noting that the company has adopted intensive measures to prevent electricity theft. It aims to preserve the state’s financial rights and the citizens’ to obtain proper service.
Fouda added that they sold about 1.2m LED bulbs, and some consumers would pay for their bulbs in instalments on their monthly electricity consumption bills.
Furthermore, he explained that installation process of already paid smart electricity metres are ongoing, noting that no new requests for smart metres will be accepted without the cabinet’s approval.
The EEHC had decided to extend the period of conducting measurements for installation of smart electricity metres in the ashwa’yat (informal housing areas) until the end of May.
Moreover, Fouda stated that the decision is part of the ministry’s keenness to give people an opportunity to adjust their situation unless they will be subjected to severe punitive measures, most notably being sued for electricity theft.
