The Ministry of Health has conducted more than 118,000 surgery operations as part of the presidential initiative for finishing the urgent waiting lists, according to the Minister of Health, Hala Zayed, in a statement on Tuesday.

The health ministry’s spokesperson, Khaled Mogahed, said that the performed operations included 60,048 cardiac catheterisation operations, 10,865 open heart surgeries, 27,413 ophthalmology-related operations, 4,034 neurosurgeries, 5,156 orthopaedic surgeries, 5,353 tumour surgeries, 905 cochlear implantations, 130 kidney transplantations, and 139 liver transplantations.

He added that the minister of health has raised the state of maximum readiness in all hospitals that are included in the initiative, starting from Wednesday.

The ministry increased the rate of operations to complete all delayed operations in hospitals before the beginning of the month of Ramadan, in order to prevent the accumulation of new lists, particularly in certain cases such as cardiac catheterisations and ophthalmology operations.

Moreover, the ministry will reallocate a number of cases to military hospitals, namely: Nile Valley, World Medical Centre, and police hospitals, as well as civil society hospitals and private hospitals, until applying the law of the national health insurance system.

Zayed stressed the need to follow up on the cases which are on the waiting list system, yet did not go to the hospitals in order to receive the treatment. The minister also emphasised the need to find out the reasons for their absence, and urged them to attend to receive the treatment, according to the statement.

Mogahed pointed out that the rate of completion of operations during March doubled by more than 45%, compared to February.
