USAID invests $3.5bn in Egypt’s water, wastewater facilities

Agency invested about $30bn in Egypt since 1978

The US Agency for International Development (USAID), has invested over $3.5bn since 1979 to construct or upgrade water and wastewater facilities in Egypt, according to a statement on Monday of the US embassy in Egypt.

USAID, in cooperation with the Assiut Potable Water and Sanitation Company and Egypt’s Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, inaugurated the Massara Water Treatment Plant and the Alexandria El Tahreer Wastewater Pump Station and Collection System in Assiut Governorate on Monday, added the statement.

“Since 2009, USAID’s support has helped over 370,000 residents of Assiut have access to potable water and sanitation,” said USAID Egypt Mission Director Sherry Carlin, adding, “The facilities we are inaugurating today will improve the health and living conditions, as well as the livelihoods, of thousands of families.”

The USAID partners with the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater and its subsidiaries to construct or upgrade water and wastewater facilities in underserved cities and rural areas using low-maintenance technologies and local contractors.

Additionally, the USAID helps to improve operations and management of the Holding Company and its subsidiaries to enable better service delivery, noted the statement.

Notably, the USAID has invested about $30bn in Egypt since 1978.
