Egypt’s military has celebrated establishing the first home-made Gowind-class corvette in Alexandria, as part of a 2014 contract with France, with an aim to upgrade the country’s maritime fleet.

The warship dubbed the ‘Port Said Frigate’ was manufactured by both Alexandria’s Shipyard company and France’s Naval Group company, according to Egypt’s military statement.

The statement added that the celebration was held on Friday and was attended by Ahmed Khaled, commander of Egypt’s navy, both companies’ chief executive officers and other top officials including Alexandria’s governor.

Khaled praised the efforts the warship’s manufacturing, saying that the country’s armed forces are keen on implementing an urgent strategy to upgrade the country’s marine fleet in order to enhance the stability and security of locations where navy forces operate.

The new warship is considered the most updatable unit in Egypt’s navy, which contributes to securing free navigation and the Suez Canal, which is a significant artery for international trade, elaborated Khaled.

A second frigate is to be manufactured after Egypt signed a contract with France to establish four units, noted the military in its statement.
