A source from the embassy of North Korea told Daily News Egypt that his country aims at boosting relations with Egypt in the political and economic fields, adding, “hopefully we will receive some visits during this year and the years ahead.”

The source mentioned that the economic cooperation with Egypt is very modest, and thus his country wants to enhance it, adding that the global political situation hinders boosting the bilateral relations.

“There have not been official visits between both countries since mid-2016. However, the period before that date witnessed some official visits,” the source added.

Egypt State Information Service website mentioned that Egypt has been keen to communicate with all countries and develop friendly relations, in addition to attracting investments.

North Korea played an important role during the 1973 October War by sending two Korean fighter pilots to Egypt. Egypt provided financial aid in the form of long-term soft loans to North Korea, along with medical aid by sending drugs and vaccines to Pyongyang to help the Korean people cope with the devastating floods that hit the country in 2007.

The economic relations between the two countries began in 1957 and developed into consular relations in 1961. The exchange of diplomatic representation was announced in 1963. The Egyptian embassy in Pyongyang opened on 26 November 1963.
