The Israeli embassy in Cairo was reopened on Wednesday after four years of closure. The embassy was closed since September 2011, when protesters stormed into it.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s spokesperson Ofir Gendelman announced the reopening was attended by Israeli ambassador to Egypt Haim Koren, US ambassador to Egypt Stephen Beecroft, the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s Director General Dore Gold, representatives form the Egyptian foreign ministry among others.
The embassy was stormed in September 2011 after a night of protests in front of the building, which ended by protesters throwing embassy documents from the windows. Then Israel’s ambassador to Egypt Itzhak Levanon and almost all the Israeli diplomats and their families left Egypt.
The protests were sparked by the killing of five Egyptian soldiers at the border with Israel in August 2011.
